In several of my next posts I will be sharing my own and other “bloggers” reactions to the Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture. Occasionally I will include the comments of a well known foreign writer commenting on America’s domestic horrors and the “Torture Report”. Below is an extract from Tariq Ali’s comment published in the London Review of Books blog on Eric Garner and on the Senate Torture Report. Emphasis is mine. We Can’t Breathe Tariq Ali 11 December 2014 ‘We live in a post-racial society,’ Obama enthused, referring to his own victory, soon after entering the White House. It sounded hollow at the time, though many wanted to believe it. Nobody does today. Not even Toni Morrison. But the response of tens of thousands of young US citizens to the recent outrages in Ferguson, Cleveland and New York is much more important and interesting than the vapours being emitted in DC. “…The most consequential civil liberties case in years is being argued before three judges in California on Wednesday, and it has little to do with the NSA…” No, I had never heard of NSL’s either. Apparently it is not just the CIA and the NSA “Big Brothering” us; the FBI is also in the act. Below is an extract from a piece by Trevor Timm published in the Guardian. Emphasis is mine. Details of the NSL are here and here.“
I watched a good deal of the CBC reporting of the Ottawa shooting event two days ago. I thought at the time that the coverage was astonishingly evenhanded. Below is a piece from “Mother Jones”, an alternative US Media news source, describing the CBC coverage. From Mother Jones Canada’s Coverage of the Ottawa Shootings Put American Cable News to Shame —By James West Wed Oct. 22, 2014 5:28 PM EDT The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation today gave a master class in calm, credible breaking-news reporting.
In 1988 a US destroyer shot down an Iranian airliner in the Persian Gulf, killing 290 people. This year a Malaysian airliner was shot down flying over Ukraine with the loss of 288 people. In the article below Professor Gusterson compares: The US Govt, (Reagan Administration) lies, and the US Main Stream Media echoing them, about the US military shooting down of Iranian airlines flight 655 in 1988 with The US Govt, (Obama Administration) probable lies, and the US Main Stream Media echoing them, about the (as yet unknown) circumstances surrounding the shooting down of Malaysia Air lines flight 17 in 2014.
From International Movement for a Just World THE BLOCKADE AGAINST CUBA — AN ASSAULT UPON HUMANITY’S CONSCIENCE. By Dr Chandra November 13, 2013 There are few other issues in international politics on which the nations of the world have been so totally united over so many years. On 29 October 2013, for the 22nd consecutive year, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) called for an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba. 188 states supported the Resolution, 2 voted against it, namely the US and Israel, while 3 (Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau) abstained.
From Washington’s Blog October 7, 2014 Extracted from Eric Zuesse: Udo Ulfkotte, a former editor of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (which is one of Germany’s largest newspapers), has decided to go public about the corruption of himself and the rest of the Western ‘news’ media, because he finds that this corruption is bringing Europe too close to a nuclear war against Russia, which he concludes the U.S. aristocracy that controls the CIA wants to bring about, or else to bring closer to the brink.
Extracted from the BBC December 30 2013 , quoting a survey carried out by the Win/Gallup group: Win/Gallup interviewed 67,806 people in total, in 65 countries either face-to-face, by telephone on online, between September and December 2013. The margin or error is +/- 3.5%. The global average was calculated according to the share of the covered adult population of the surveyed countries. …..
Adapted from The Gaurdian Trevor Timm, September 27 2014 (Emphasis mine) 1. Mr President, the White House sent a letter to Congress indicating that you believe the Iraq War Resolution gives you the legal authority to bomb Syria. How is this possible? Why has your administration yet to publicly release a detailed legal opinion? How is this new war legal?
Extract from the the Swedish Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research (Emphasis Mine) Danish F16s to Fight ISIS By Jan Oberg, TFF Lund, Sweden September 26, 2014 What’s your image of Denmark? Apart from the Little Mermaid, Carlsberg beer and H.C. Andersen perhaps something with decency, welfare, development aid, equality and peace? Unfortunately, that image is outdated. During the last good 15 years Denmark has participated in wars on/in Yugoslavia and Afghanistan, it was an occupying country in Iraq for four years and a main bomber nation of Libya.
At the UN, yesterday, another US President expanded USG’s perpetual wars yet again. Why? Apparently because a video posted on line supposedly showed two westerners having their heads sawed off.
